So I went to Chipotle a couple weeks ago for lunch in the MR2. I ended up parking right next to my twin - another Red 1993 turbo. When I came back to the car, there was this little note on my windshield telling about this Owners Club. So I thought I'd check it out.
Years ago, when a was young(er) and dumb(er) and poor(er) I had a Blue 1991 turbo. It was a fun car, but I couldn't afford it and so I eventually had to get rid of it. Nowadays I have a rule about financing cars - I don't do it. So I don't drive brand new vehicles, but neither do I have any car payments!
Earlier this year I was looking for a cheapy commuter car. I wanted something fairly nice, but inexpensive and good on gas at the same time. That ruled out an LS400. I was actually looking at ES300s when I saw this MR2 for sale. It was not my color of choice, but it was a '93, a turbo and had t-tops. I test drove it, and that was all it took. I actually paid the guy a little more than the asking price because someone else was interested too. And get this - the original 3 in 1 CD player still works!
The MR2 is impractical, uncomfortable on long trips and terrible in the snow, and it's the most fun car I've ever driven! I've already had people offering to buy it. But I think I'll hold on to it (unless I come across a 1993 or up in that teal green color with tan leather). And this way I'll be prepared if/when a mid-life crisis comes.
